Long Day, Short Week.
6AM, off to rent the Bobcat tractor with a shank fitted plow box in the back and a dump bucket in the front.
Carving roads, making tracks, kicking up dust. Jon Farmer (not to be confused with Farmer Jon) was tearing up the place all day. I cut new tracks up the center and all around to divide the property into four quadrants.
Ang on the other hand got stuck with the shovel, digging up apple roots, weeds and whatever else was in the newly carved road.
And we had to test out the road. It worked great at holding up the jeep.

too cool! what a big job.
for a wind break look into the austree.com
it is a hybrid of the popler (sp) and willow. it can be planted in staggered rows and irrigated with a drip system to conserve water. it can grow from 5 to 10 feet a year, i have heard.
we first saw it used in the kiwi ranches in new Zealand. as you know the fruite is very fragile. it works well in controlling snow drift.
check it out

oh, i use a John Deeer about the size that you are renting. one hint, make sure that when the bucket is loaded ( or not) drive it in the lowest position that you can or the load will roll the tractor. also keep your hand on the bucket controls and don’t hesitate to totaly DROP the bucket if you feel ANY tipping motion. keep in in low gear and don’t go to fast. on any slop don’t “side hill”
good luck.

Thanks Steve, I now remember your recommendations about the Austree and it looks like that’s what we might go for a 2-3 other people also suggested it. It might be a while before we make a tractor decision, but we will definitely be terracing the land to make it safe for tractor driving!
